This Course... Popular culture is inundated with references to the supernatural: from the vampires of Twilight to the ever-present tales of the walking dead. But where did our obsession with all things terrifying and suspenseful originate? More importantly, what does it mean for a society to be so fascinated by the darker side of the unknown? This course seeks to answer this question by investigating the influence of classic and modern British texts on our culture. The core works include Beowulf, Macbeth, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and a variety of short stories, such as works by Neil Gaiman and Arthur Conan Doyle.
